A MAN said he had made 'a drunken mistake' after causing hundreds of pounds of damage to his ex-girlfriend's car.

Andrew Ponsford admitted causing criminal damage without lawful excuse following an incident on November 2 last year.

He appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court after causing £249.60 worth of damage to Zoe Wilson's car.

Prosecution solicitor Diane Jackson said: “Zoe Wilson and the defendant were in a relationship for eight years and she was ignoring his calls and heard banging at the door.

“She knew he was drunk and asked him to go away.

“She contacted the police and then later went outside to check on her car but the windscreen wipers had been damaged and they were in working order when she had left them.”

The 35-year-old was not represented in court but said: “Everything she has said here today was correct.

"I made a drunken mistake and I am paying for it now.”

The magistrates ordered the Newby Terrace resident to pay compensation of £249.60 and was fined £100.

He was also told to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £32.
