A NUMBER of events at a festival designed to celebrate the beauty of Cumbria's night-time skies have been cancelled due to the weather forecasted for the weekend.

The Dark Skies Festival Cumbria, being delivered by Friends of the Lake District (FoLD) in partnership with Cumbria Tourism and Forestry England, begins today and runs till Sunday.

On its website, FoLD said it was sorry to announce a number of events had been cancelled. These are:

- February 21: 

  • Sounds of Dusk at Eycott Hill Nature Reserve
  • Nature's Nightlife at Grizedale Forest
  • Exploring the Dark at the Solway Wetlands Centre
  • Whinlatter Dark Skies Walk at Whinlatter Forest
  • Mountain Bike Night Ride at Whinlatter Forest (today and tomorrow)
  • Night E-Mountain Biking Guided Ride at Whinlatter Forest (today and tomorrow)

- February 22:

  • Exploring the Dark at Staveley Mill Yard
  • An Introduction to the Night Sky at Whinlatter Forest
  • Nature's Nightlife at Whinlatter Forest

Also cancelled are the Earth Photo Exhibition at Grizedale Forest and Intrastellar at Grizedale Tarn.

The Whinlatter Dark Skies Walk on Sunday faces 'possible cancellation'.

The FoLD website states: "Anybody booked onto these events will be contacted by organisers but do contact them directly if you have any questions or queries."
