A WALKING fanatic, who climbs a mountain every day as part of his job, has celebrated his 600th ascent of Helvellyn.

Jon Bennett, the Lake District National Park Authority’s fell top assessor, takes on a peak every day in order to collate vital information for Lake District Weatherline – a website service providing life-saving information about the conditions of Helvellyn 365 days a year.

Mr Bennet, who previously worked in hospitality, conquered his 600th ascent of Helvellyn as a Fell Top Assessor on Wednesday.

Over his 12 winter seasons the biggest change has been technology as he can now instantly update condition reports to help people climb safety.

Mr Bennet said: "One of us walks up Helvellyn every day during the winter months; this includes New Year’s Day, Boxing Day and even Christmas Day.

"It is surprising how many folk are out enjoying sandwiches on the summit of Helvellyn, rather than a roast turkey at home.

"On Wednesday I celebrated my 600th assent of Helvellyn as being a Fell Top Assessor with the National Park Authority.

"I walk up Helvellyn far more than any other hill for several reasons. Firstly, although the third highest peak in the Lakes, it is more popular to climb owing to it being so readily accessible.

"Secondly, it has a large easterly face which retains the snow for longer. Thirdly, there are several routes to the summit and fourthly, there is a kettle when we finish."
