Plans to turn a listed building in Cockermouth town centre into flats have been given the go-ahead.

Adrian Murray, of Murray Property Developments, applied to Allerdale council to turn The Wordsworth Hotel, a Grade II listed building on Main Street, into eight flats.

Now permission has been granted for the work to be carried out.

Plans would see four flats on the first floor and a the same amount on the second.

A commercial unit will be retained at the ground floor.

Planning officers said the proposal was sympathetic with the surroundings.

A report said: "It is considered that the works proposed would lead to less than substantial harm to the significance of this designated heritage asset.

"The works would see the reuse and refurbishment of this heritage asset, offering benefits both to the economy from the commercial unit and providing new dwellings."
