A CAPTIVATING image of the Ullswater Steamer has won the prestigious Wainwright Society photographic competition.
Ullswater Steamer heading to Glenridding by Jeff Coates
came tops in the 2019 Photographic Competition.
The runner up was Great Door, Yewbarrow by Elaine Hudson.
A total of 101 photos were received from 36 members who had to submit their photos by Sunday, January 12.
Award winning filmmaker Terry Abraham, and honorary member of the society, was the judge.
He said: "I had to do a double-take when I first saw this photo.
"A superbly composed shot featuring one of the Ullswater steamers heading for Glenridding with the flanks of Helvellyn looming large in the background. I love this image particularly for its use of focal length with the lens used.
"It affords a sense of majesty and scale, as England's third highest peak stands proud overlooking Ullswater.
"A view I’m terribly familiar with, given I don’t live far away and also from filming Life of a Mountain: Helvellyn – hence I had to look twice at the picture. A wonderful photo and a much-deserved winner.
"You can't beat a bit of winter light and snow to set the scene in this composition, either.
On the Great Door, Yewbarrow photo he added: "What is striking about this image is its sense of scale. The portrait format works well, and the view is marvellous of course.
"Lovely composition, makes you wish you could be there to savour it all too."
