A PENSIONER has been found guilty of assault after punching a woman in the face.

Brian Glencross, 74, was charged with the offence after following the victim in his car before getting out and hitting her.

The Walney man pleaded not guilty to assaulting the victim, Jasmine Bowler, but was convicted by magistrates after a trial.

South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday that the altercation happened after Glencross became involved in a road rage incident.

South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court heard Glencross was involved in road rage incident after 4pm on April 29 on Walney.

The victim was said to have been driving home from work at that time when she noticed Glencross’ blue Citroen Berlingo driving extremely close behind her.

The woman turned right heading onto the Promenade only for the defendant to follow her.

The court was told he overtook her twice and then stopped his car in between bollards to block her way.

The court heard Glencross got out his car and approached the woman without saying anything before hitting her in the face and the arm.

Magistrates then heard the man had walked back to his car before driving off in the direction of Mill Lane.

After deliberations, the court returned a verdict of guilty.

Glencross, of Calder Green on Walney, was sentenced to a community order.

He was given a curfew ordering him to stay at home between the hours of 7pm and 7am for the next four weeks.

The pensioner was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £85 and £620 in prosecution costs.

He was originally also charged with driving without due care and attention on Walney Promenade and Mill Lane but that charge was dropped before the trial came to court.
