ZOO bosses say they are delighted after a report praised work to improve standards.

A report presented before Barrow Council lauded South Lakes Safari Zoo in Dalton for its ‘considerable efforts’ since its last inspection.

Concerns had been raised over the zoo’s record-keeping and ventilation for animals but the report, presented before the licensing regulatory committee, said they had been dealt with.

A special inspection was carried out in November by the council’s commercial team leader and advising vet Dr Matt Brash.

At the committee meeting, councillors agreed to note ‘progress had been made’ at the zoo.

Reflecting on the zoo’s progress chief executive Karen Brewer said: “It’s been a tumultuous three years and lots of people have contributed to get us where we are today.

“We were never naive enough to think this was either going to be easy or that we could do it without expert help from consultants who works with us weekly, our awesome members, visitors and of course staff.

“We can always improve and we will continue to do so.”

Cumbria Zoo Company Ltd was issued a licence in May 2017 by Barrow Borough Council after site owner David Gill was refused permission to operate a zoo.

In May 2019 council-appointed inspectors visited the zoo and first raised concerns about ventilation and record-keeping.

Anna Gillard, a director and health and safety officer, said: “We have to carry on going now, taking what lies ahead in our stride and overcome any obstacles together.

“We most certainly are not afraid of a challenge.

“It’s fantastic to start 2020 with a positive. Let’s see what this year brings.”
