A BARROW cafe has been slapped with a one food hygiene rating in its latest inspection.

Abbey Mill Cafe Shop in Manor Road, Barrow has been awarded its lowest ever score for its recent food hygiene inspection.

The cafe was inspected by officers from Barrow Borough Council on December 11 where it was rated under the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Jackie Baxter, manager of Abbey Mill Cafe, said they were 'very disappointed' with the results.

"We were very surprised with the rating as we're not doing anything any differently," she said.

"This is the lowest score we've ever had so it's definitely disappointing.

"The fact our cafe is based in a 14th century building plays a part.

"The score is somewhat misleading as it reflects a failure of the building rather than the food.

"We will be requesting a revisit where we will hope to achieve a higher score."

During the inspection, officers found ‘major improvement necessary’ in the management of food safety.

The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building was deemed ‘improvement necessary’ by inspectors.

However, the hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was rated ‘good’ by environmental health officers.

In its previous inspection, which took place in December 2018, the cafe was awarded a three for its food hygiene inspection.

Barrow Borough Council encourages any food business dissatisfied with its score to request a re-visit.
