A MAN from Barrow suffered serious injuries after being involved in a crash on the A590.

The 49-year-old was taken to Royal Preston Hospital.

Police said his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Emergency services were called to a one vehicle crash near Lindale between the Meathop roundabout and Newby Bridge at around 5.45pm on Wednesday night.

Ian Maynard, chair of Lindale parish council, said: “When crashes happen in that area the increased congestion from the diversion is unpleasant for Lindale.

“At least the route through our town is a viable option, unlike further down the A590 where you have to go through the backroads if there is an incident.

“There are far too many accidents on that road.

“I think Highways England should really look into the safety of the A590.”

At the time of the crash motorists were experiencing heavy winds and rainfall with very little visibility.

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 17:48 to reports of a road traffic collision on the A590.

"We sent an ambulance and an advanced paramedic to the scene.

“The patient was taken to Royal Preston Hospital, which is a major trauma centre, with serious injuries.”

Three fire engines, from Grange, Kendal, and Milnthorpe were called out to the incident.

A fire service spokesman said they were called off by the police who had already freed the driver before the fire crews arrived on the scene.

The road was closed for about five hours and was reopened at 11.39pm.

Police were diverting traffic through Lindale which reconnects to the A590 further on.
