A BARROW man has been ordered to pay almost £300 for being drunk and disorderly and possessing cannabis.

Police were called to Egerton Court in the early hours of December 28 to deal with an unconnected incident when officers became aware of Benjamin Moore.

The 22-year-old, formerly of Howgill Close in Kendal but now living in Egerton Court, was ‘clearly under the influence’, a court heard.

He was asked to calm down and leave the area but he refused.

At South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday prosecutor Pam Ward said: “It was 1.30am. Police were called to the scene and while dealing with another male the defendant was heard shouting and swearing despite repeated requests to leave the area.

“He then squared up to a member of the public and was arrested and taken to Barrow Police Station.”

The court heard Moore had a number of previous convictions including for possession of cannabis, assault and assaulting an emergency services worker for which he was given a community order in October of last year.

Defending himself, Moore said there was nothing he wanted to add.

Brian Carruthers from the Probation Service said Moore had a ‘shaky start’ on his current community order.

“He was given a number of unpaid work hours and Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days,” Mr Carruthers said.

“It was a shaky start but he now has stable accommodation and is attending.”

The court heard Moore had 223 unpaid work hours remaining and owed a total of £723 to the court.

He was fined £80 for being drunk and disorderly and an additional £80 for possession of cannabis.

He was also told to pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.

Magistrates also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the cannabis.
