A DALTON woman faces jail today after fracturing a pensioner's spine at a Barrow working men's club.

Sarah Louise Holme pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm without intent when she appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates' Court last month.

The 52-year-old had been drinking with her mother in the Preston Street Working Men's Club on the afternoon of Wednesday August 29 in 2018.

She was drunk and began swearing at other drinkers including 75-year-old Edith Goulding.

She left and was followed shortly afterwards by Miss Goulding who was going outside for a cigarette.

Holme pushed Miss Goulding to the throat with both hands and she fell backwards and banged her head on a chair.

"The defendant was confronted by the victim's son and other witnesses."

Miss Goulding was taken to A&E at Furness General Hospital.

A scan revealed she had sustained a wedge fracture to one of her vertebrae in the lower part of her spine.

"During interview the defendant admitted she had been intoxicated; her mum is an alcoholic and she constantly bought her drinks.

"She didn't remember much of the night but recalls having an argument with her partner.

"This is a matter which the crown would say should go to the crown court for sentence."

Defence solicitor Mike Graham agreed with the prosecution's suggestion that sentencing should take place at the crown court.

"She has acted in a reckless manner," he said.

"The victim was saying something to her (Holme) on the way out and the victim's son put his hands on the victim as though to stop her from going further and the defendant then pushed her away."

Legal advisor Amy Watkin told magistrates the offence would likely warrant a sentence of 18 months in custody.

Legal advisor Amy Watkin said the offence would likely warrant a sentence of 18 months.

Holme, of Ennerdale Close in Dalton, will be sentenced at Preston Crown Court today.
