THE new decade 'will be the one where we make or break the future itself'.

Citing the Christmas Day typhoon that has killed more than 50 people in the Philippines and the recent bushfires in Australia, Harry Brunskill, a member of Extinction Rebellion Furness, said: “There’s no arguing with the science - either we urgently reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gases or we tip into catastrophic climate change that could well leave the planet uninhabitable.”

“There’s a great deal of completely justified anxiety about the future and there’s only one cure - doing something about it.”

XR member Dr Steve Johnson said: “The new decade brings an opportunity. The last one brought denial - of the science, of the facts, of the effects of climate change and ecosystem destruction.

“But it also brought increasing awareness of the need for action, awareness of the lies told to protect the profits and investments of a few people and an awareness of the power of communities coming together, of the ability of individuals to stand up and be counted.

“Instead we must demand that every promise is acted on - every Government plan, every department and every piece of legislation must take account of the climate emergency.

"Active citizens should challenge, question why and why not, holding all to account for the future of our children and generations to come.”

“People can take responsibility by not polluting, driving less, being active, helping others and standing up for each other, supporting the communities they are part of.

"This is the role that XR Furness will be continuing in the new decade, raising awareness and helping people take action, bringing individuals together.”
