HIGHWAYS bosses have said they are ‘aware’ there are issues with the new surface on the A595 through Askam less than six months after it was repaired.

Earlier this week motorists voiced concerns that the resurfaced road was ‘disintegrating’ despite only just recently having been repaired.

They also claim the surface was in a good condition and questioned why it had been resurfaced.

One motorist, who uses the A595 daily, said: “The new surface, laid only a few months ago, especially on the hill through Ireleth, now has large patches where it’s disintegrating.

“There hasn’t been any cold weather and the new surface was laid only a short time ago.

“I really don’t why they resurfaced that part - by laying a terrible rough and gritty surface over a high quality one, which had only been laid a year or two before.”

Bosses from Cumbria County Council, which is responsible for maintenance of the A595, said ‘surface dressing’ is carried out every year to protect road surfaces.

They added that that were aware of problems with the A595 and would be monitoring the road’s surface.

A spokesman said: “Cumbria County Council undertake an extensive annual surface dressing programme across the county.

“This is done to seal up roads and provide a cost effective protection to the surface.

“The tar and chippings applied is rougher in feel but provides good adhesion for vehicles, making it a better surface during the colder winter months.

“We are monitoring this section of the A595 throughout the winter as we are aware of surface loss of chippings in places.”
