MOTORISTS headed for the M6 Southbound are facing major delays as a result of congestion caused by the road's partial closure this weekend.

The section between Junction 32 and Junction 33 of the M6 will remain closed until the coming week to allow for a bridge demolition.

Road authorities have advised that the congestion caused by the closure has impacted journeys between the Junction 35 Carneforthe Interchange at Morecambe and Junction 36 at Kendal.

Heavy congestion along diversion routes through surrounding areas has brought certain roads - including stretches of the A6 - to a standstill. The backlog of traffic has been exacerbated by a number of bumps and breakdowns along these routes.

Highways England is warning drivers not to use the routes unless absolutely necessary and to take the congestion into consideration when planning their journeys.
