24,000 CHILDREN in Cumbria are now meeting the new Chief Medical Officer's recommendations for physical activity, according to new data.

Almost half of children in Cumbria now take part in an average of 60 minutes of physical activity a day, while the number of active children at Primary age has increased slightly by 1.8%.

More broadly, almost half of children and young people (43.4%) in Cumbria are doing the recommended average of 60 or more minutes of physical activity a day.

Sport England’s ‘Active Lives Survey for Children and Young People’ report - which covered the period between September 2018 and July 2019 - also found that 36.8% of children and young people do an average of 30 minutes or more a day at school, while 53.8% do so outside school. The study found, however, that significant inequalities remained across race, gender and affluence brackets.
