WE asked readers to nominate their favourite restaurants and pubs serving food in Askam, Dalton, Ulverston and Millom.
1. The Farmers, Ulverston
This recently-refurbished popular restaurant offers an unrivalled menu in stunning surroundings. Popular main course dishes include beef brisket (£14), slow and low pork ribs (£13), Mediterranean kebab (£14), mussels (£14), Greek salad (£12), and a hot and fiery pizza (£12).
2. A Taste of India, Askam
It’s worth the trip to Askam to try out this excellent Indian. Authentic meals, ranging from mild to spicy, are served by the helpful staff. The biryani is a popular favourite among readers.
3. The Old Farmhouse, Ulverston
The best day to visit this restaurant on the Coast Road heading out of Ulverston is undoubtedly Sunday. Their roasts are ‘to die for’, one reader said, with the quality of the meat beyond compare.
4. Hartley’s, Dalton
It may be one of the smaller venues around but don’t let that put you off this exceptional restaurant. It’s definitely advisable to book, readers said, as there’s only a handful of tables but the quality and ‘cordon bleu’ food is definitely worth waiting for.
5. Da Vinci, Millom
A true family-run restaurant, with Gillian and Biagio at the helm supported by children Robert, Andrew, Alicia and their talented and trained chef son, Paul. Da Vinci offers traditional Italian fare and the staff are more than happy to accommodate any requests or amendments. Readers suggest one of their home-made pizzas.
6. Bici Cafe, Ulverston
Couple Gwill Baldassarre and Katrina Allison told the story of their decision to convert a 300-year-old bicycle shop into a contemporary café-pizzeria in TV show Starting Up, Starting Over in 2017. Since then this delightful Italian has become a firm favourite.
7. The Clocktower, Millom
Sadly the Clocktower is only open Friday-Sunday but the restricted opening times aren’t reflective of the extensive menu. Their burgers - ‘thick and juicy’ said one reader, are a favourite along with the excellent cocktails on offer.
8. The Chocolate Room, Dalton
This perfectly-positioned little cafe is heaven to those of us with a sweet tooth. Surrounded by the aroma of truffles and treats, you can sit and watch the world go by while trying out one of their fresh sandwiches and perhaps even partake in a professionally-prepared pudding.
