SOUTH Lakes MP Tim Farron has been appointed the Liberal Democrats' spokesperson for farming.

The former party leader- who retained his Westmorland and Lonsdale seat in December's general election - was named agricultural spokesperson yesterday, while remaining the party’s spokesperson for local government, housing and the North of England.

Mr Farron's seat was the only constituency in Cumbria that did not go blue on December 12, as the Conservative Party stormed the county - winning traditional Labour seats like Barrow and Workington, while Trudy Harrison .

He said: "I’m delighted to have been appointed to this vital role. Farming is so important to life here in Cumbria: whether it’s creating jobs, producing food or looking after our world-class landscape.

"But with Britain set to leave the European Union at the end of the month, and with the Government hell-bent on dismantling the Basic Payment Scheme, there’s never been more of an uncertain time for our hard-working local farmers. Therefore, it’s essential that we have MPs...who are willing to fight the corner of British farmers."
