IT'S been a long time coming but it finally looks as though action is being taken against rail provider Northern.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps has announced that the government has launched a process which will see Northern either given a short-term contract or be stripped of the franchise.

But why has it taken so long?

The problems with Northern's unreliable and, at best, sketchy, services have been going on for years.

Those of us who regularly use the trains will know you simply can't rely on a train turning up on time or even turning up.

And if you use the railway to get to work, or to go on holiday, you're faced with a dilemma - do you run the risk and take your chances with Northern or do you find an alternative, typically more expensive option?

Of course we will all welcome action being taken but Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron is right - it can't come a moment too soon.

Mr Farron points out that the government should have realised the train services were in chaos sooner.

And he's got a very valid point.

Is the action an example of the government 'rewarding' the northern constituencies for the election result?

Whatever the reason, at least we are finally seeing action, but the government must be firm and ensure this process isn't lengthy.

We need action now.
