TWO South Cumbrian community champions have been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s honours list.

The BEM is awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. This year, John Shakeshaft and Vivienne Rees are among those honoured.

John Shakeshaft, 70, from Ulverston, has been honoured with a BEM for services to Young People in Ulverston.

In 1979, he moved to Ulverston and worked with the local church to establish a new Boys’ Brigade company, which he has led ever since.

In addition to this, he has also run Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, as well as being a governor for Croftlands Junior School.

This is where he set up a Weekend Walking Group for the children.

The Walking Group has been a successful way of engaging those who otherwise do not engage in sports, and in particular those who are coming from difficult home situations.

He said: “I was surprised and honoured to be chosen.

“A few people spoke to me about this and I received a few nominations from my friends and who I am involved with including the minister.

“I am just gobsmacked really.”

Vivienne Rees has also been honoured with a BEM for services to her community in Grasmere.

She served as a district councillor where she championed the needs of older residents in rural locations.

She is chair of Grasmere Village Society, set up to protect the unique qualities of the area.

She ensured the continued provision of public realm such as public seating, new pathways, enhanced play facilities for younger people and bus shelters.

She was a Governor for Lakes School and ensured that the needs of young people in rural areas is at the forefront of decision making.
