THE Conservative Party has secured the majority it says it needs to deliver Brexit, in a historic general election result that saw Labour lose many of its 'heartlands' seats in the North.

One of those seats was Barrow which Conservative candidate, Simon Fell - who lost out by just 207 votes in 2017's snap poll - won by/with a margin of almost 6,000 votes on Thursday. It is the first time the Tories have taken the seat since the 1980s and the biggest majority in the Barrow and Furness seat since 2010.

Here is what Mail readers thought of the outcome to the ballot.

A number of readers simply offered their congratulations to Mr Fell and wished him luck in the new role at a pivotal time constitutionally and politically in the UK's history.

In an expression of voters' frustration with delays to Brexit, Terry Parmenter said: "Congratulations to the Conservatives. Now get on with it."

Geoff Dale said: "Why did this happen? Maybe because conserving our sovereignty, conserving our [system of] western free market capitalism and having the EU referendum result carried out means more to people than promises of free stuff!"

Zina Myakicheff Preston warned: "You’d better vote against selling off the NHS!"

Anne Lowther made the following appeal to Barrow's new MP: "Simon, we need Barrow back on the map - we need to build up the town, lift peoples heads up, give them something to be part of."

Emma Neeson said this: "'I'm a Labour supporter and I haven't been offensive or a 'sore loser' as it's being put. But I am worried that people will continue to struggle. Best of luck to the new MP of our town I really hope you do make the changes we need. Also please do not let us lose the NHS."

Dave Hoyland said: "I hope I am very wrong and the majority of the town are right."

Joe Johnson said: "He [Fell] won't last - it's a Labour town and always will be"

Carly Hall, finally, said: "I'm personally devastated, but I believe in democracy and this is how people have voted. I just hope that we don't see more hardship in this town but I find that incredibly unlikely."
