LABOUR’S parliamentary candidate for Barrow visited GRILLa Cheese to help launch his party’s ‘20 pledges for business’.
Chris Altree highlighted the benefits he argued Labour’s pledge to roll out free fibre-optic broadband nationwide and its promise to upgrade roads in the North-West would have for businesses in the Furness area.
Mr Altree also said Labour was committed to starting a new business development agency to act as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for business support, as well as offering businesses face-to-face and online support.
He added that Labour would promote small and medium-sized enterprises in government contracts and procurement processes.
He told The Mail: “The 20 pledges are there to help our small businesses grow and to support them to be the best they can be...the Labour Party is fully behind a modern, thriving economy where small to medium enterprises can access the help they need.
“The Conservative government has not helped our small businesses, but we will help them get paid on time, access free childcare and bring down utility bills. We will always give our small and medium business owners the support and flexibility to be world leaders while also being able to pay staff a living wage.”
Simon Fell, the Conservative candidate for Barrow, said: “We plan to cut business rates further if we win this election, to help local businesses grow and thrive -with an especial focus on small retailers, local music venues, pubs and cinemas.
"This is a move that has been welcomed by local businesses in Furness. Barrow and Furness cannot risk Jeremy Corbyn’s socialist experiments.”
