A MAN who has just months to live is desperate to uncover the truth about a baby boy found dumped in a tip 30 years ago before he dies of cancer.

Donald Eaton, 68, said his life had been ‘haunted’ by the unsolved mystery which has stemmed from the grim discovery on Redhills tip in Millom in 1989.

The biggest murder hunt in Cumbria began on December 1 that year after the badly burnt body of the boy, aged between a year and 18 months old, was discovered.

Despite no stone being left unturned the child’s death, and just who he was, still remains a mystery.

The case, which later came to be known as the Millom tip baby, prompted Mr Eaton to undergo a three decade-long search for answers.

Now, 30 years on, Mr Eaton’s dying wish is to discover the truth behind the infamous case.

He laid a wreath at the unnamed boy’s grave.

He said: “I want to find out what really happened before I pass away from cancer.

“This is what keeps me going in my final few months.

“That baby deserves to be laid down to rest in peace.”

Mr Eaton is still appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“Someone must know something about what happened all those years ago,” he said.

“I’m trying to keep the story alive for as long as possible.

“I want to find out the truth more than ever.”

Mr Eaton, who lives in Egremont, said he believed ‘justice must be served’ after 30 years of unanswered questions.

He has approached Scotland Yard, Crimewatch and The Queen to try to gain backing to find the identity of the boy.

“That baby deserves to be identified and laid to rest," he said.
