LET'S hope there are no more delays in the new Blue Light hub for Furness.

For 16 months it has stood as an embarrassing, half-started shell at the side of the A590 - passed by thousands of motorists every day - since tools were downed and contractors walked out on the project.

It is not clear from the statements what extra costs, if any, have been incurred, but hopefully they will not ramp up the £4.6 million budget.

It is high time this project moved on and it is good to see a contractor willing to get the job under way in 2020.

We owe a debt of gratitude to our emergency service personnel, be they police, fire or ambulance staff, who need a decent, modern base to operate from, given their reliance on technology.

Unlike yesteryear when many people gave little thought to the historic buildings they worked in, having bright, new, purpose-built attractive headquarters, with plenty of parking, also helps lure new recruits to take up these important jobs.

There is also a lot to be said for closer partnership working between the different agencies who all have a role to play during a crisis, be it a serious crash or flooding.

Given its location, hopefully it will provide a sense of reassurance for people living not only in Ulverston, but those right along the A590.
