ULVERSTON’S Hoad Monument is illuminating green for one night in support of the NSPCC’s ‘Light For Every Childhood’ Christmas campaign.

On Wednesday December 11, the iconic monument will be lit in the charity’s distinctive green to help raise awareness of the campaign and make sure every child knows how and where to speak out about abuse.

The Monument will represent Cumbria in a Christmas campaign spanning the whole country, lighting up 50 buildings in total.

This year’s campaign also coincides with ‘Get Your Sparkle On’.

The charity is encouraging people across the nation to add some sparkle to their Christmas celebrations, whether wearing sparkly accessories, baking, or crafting sparkly goodies, to fundraise for the charity.

The Mayor of Ulverston Cllr Sharon Webster commented “We are delighted to be able to support the NSPCC’s Get Your Sparkle On campaign this Christmas”

Peter Wanless, Chief Executive of the NSPCC said: “We’re extremely grateful that the Hoad Monument in Ulverston will be floodlit in green to help raise awareness of the NSPCC’s ‘Light For Every Childhood’ Christmas campaign and encourage everyone to ‘get their sparkle on’ in Cumbria.

“It’s easy for anyone to take part in Get Your Sparkle On this December 11 – whether you’re just wearing a sparkly jumper, or organising a sparkling bake-off at work, every single penny raised will go towards helping children and young people get the help they need this Christmas”.

The aim of this year’s campaign is to bring A Light For Every Childhood.

One in five children in the UK have suffered abuse - and this Christmas Childline counsellors will speak to hundreds of children about issues including suicidal feelings and self-harm – when they often have nowhere else to turn.

The NSPCC is here to help, but sadly one in three calls to its Childline service will go unanswered. That’s why every penny raised is so vital.

Every sparkle, every sequin and every pound raised for the NSPCC helps protect children. Just £3 helps our Speak Out Stay Safe programme teach a primary school pupil how to recognise abuse and get help, and £90 will provide a special assembly to 30 primary school pupils.
