AN AUTHOR has published a book which depicts his life in care as a child.

The book entitled ‘Oi’ is drawn from the troubling experiences Dave Jackson faced when growing up in foster homes in the UK from when he was one until 17 years of age.

Mr Jackson who now lives on Walney and works as a project planner for BAE Systems, writes whenever he gets the chance.

He is currently in discussion with film directors and producers to try and create a feature film based on the book, which he hopes to be on screens by 2021.

The 55-year-old father of one said: “It is a personal thing for me on retaining the story of personal endeavour.

“It was never really meant for publication, but people who read it told me that I needed to get it out there.

“It started as a diary, so we had to add the readability factor.

“I spent 16 years in the care system and now I work with them to help improve the system.

“A lot of people get away with a lot of things in there, and this is an exposé of how thing were for me.

“People have been really supportive, especially those with professional blogs and it has really stood out.

“People who actually lived in homes seem to be rallying around the content, as someone has got it down on paper.

“It really seems to be galvanising momentum to take lessons from this and apply it to the future of care.

“So there is quite a big movement to make positive change, so it is quite an exciting time.

“Children in care are being criminalised. 90 percent of children are in care for something that they have not done.

“We need to change the perception that they are bad children, and level the playing field for them when compared to those who have a different background.

“This shows people that are from a care background can succeed despite the issues, just look at me.”

Mr Jackson, of Headland Rise, is currently writing a fiction piece which is for a much broader audience. Depending on it’s success he may consider being an author full-time.
