Mail readers took to social media to air their views on Tuesday night’s ITV leaders’ debate between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn, the first televised head-to-head contest between the leaders of the two largest national parties as part of the general election campaign. Furness residents will cast their ballots on December 12.

Beverly Colins Morgan said of the clash: “Johnson suffering a Brexistential crisis. Tiresome and unable to come up with any new material. Corbyn showed compassion and leadership qualities especially when heckled about the climate emergency. Corbyn was the outright winner.”

Stephen Jay’s take on the debate was: “I'm not a Corbyn fan, but in my opinion he won that one. Mr Johnson was like a broken record.”

Meanwhile, John Simpson said: “Pains me to say it but Corbin did well. Would of still liked to see farage on it [sic]. Neither will get my vote. Brexit party all the way.”

Greg Rose perhaps came closest to mirroring a snap YouGov poll on Tuesday which suggested the two leaders cancelled each other out (but also indicated a clear win for Mr Corbyn among the undecided voters surveyed), saying: “Same old sound bites by both nothing new to what they've said on their speeches during the campaign, but Corbyn shaded this tonight as didn't keep referring back to Brexit.”
