PLANS have been put forward to build even more properties on an Ulverston housing development despite major flooding concerns.

West End Nurseries housing development in Ulverston has sought planning permission to build five more properties alongside its already approved 87 new homes.

The development, which is located just off West End Lane and close to Siemans factory, will comprise of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes.

However, the site, headed by Story Homes, is classed as a medium flood risk area, causing concern among councillors and residents.

Councillor Andrew Butcher said he will be voting against the additional houses.

He said: "I am against any houses which are built near a flood plain.

"I do not support the plans whatsoever.

"I am questioning why more houses are needed to be built when there is a lack of demand for it especially on a flood risk zone."

However, councillor Mark Wilson welcomes the news of further homes.

"I have examined the plans and am assured they does not pose a major flood risk," he said.

"I think there will always be a demand for houses in Ulverston."

A spokeswoman for Story Homes said: "Following the grant of planning permission earlier this year we have reviewed the approved layout and identified a number of potential improvements.

"We consider that the submitted scheme is an improved design over the original development in that the road pattern is more legible and the proposed POS is consolidated and more usable.

"The submitted scheme uses a new range of houses types which are designed to be better suited to the needs of an ageing population.

"The houses are designed so as to be more easily adaptable for older people.

"The site was initially allocated for 92 units, the re-plan scheme now meets this allocation."
