YOBS who threw a stone at a train travelling through Barrow have been branded ‘idiots’.

British Transport Police said the outer skin of the window of a Northern train was smashed after a stone was thrown at it at Salthouse Junction.

Robert Parker, from the Furness Line Action Group, said: “They are yobs that chuck stones at cars and other things, they are idiots, maybe a lack of parental guidance is to blame.

“There is no reason why anyone would want to do this.

“It is dangerous.

“The impact could shock passengers and cause an issue.

“The stone broke the outer glazing of the window so the train would have just carried on through with the journey by the time the driver found out.”

He added: “It may have been a bit of a shock for the person sat there but there was no issue other than that as it only damaged the outer shell.

Officers said it happened around 1pm on Sunday and there were no injuries to passengers.

A spokesperson from Northern, said: “The window needed to be replaced, it was taken off the tracks to do this.

“This would have caused a slight disruption to this service, but this one alone.”

Mr Parker said: “It did not disrupt services on Sunday as there were no cancellations on that route and everything in the area was within five minutes of the expected arrival time, bar one cancelled London service which was not related to this issue.”
