DRIVERS who flout road closures when the streets of Ulverston are packed with shoppers on market days have been warned they will be prosecuted.

Police and councillors have issued a plea for common sense after a number of motorists contravened road closures on New Market Street on Thursday.

Signs are displayed every Thursday and Saturday for Ulverston street market users to visit the various stalls in Market Street.

Mark Wilson, an Ulverston town councillor, has urged drivers to stick to the signs.

He said: “Some people may have legitimate business driving down Market Street on market days such as for deliveries.

“However, the majority of people are going down there without good reason which is wrong and potentially very dangerous.”

Cllr Wilson said he believed action should be taken against those that breach the orders.

He said: “Action should be taken for those that flout the rules.

“It’s very dangerous for motorists to drive down this stretch of road on market days when the streets are filled with pedestrians.

“Our main priority is keeping the public as safe as possible.

“Driving during a busy period like market day is very dangerous and could cause serious accidents.

“Beyond this, idling cars heavily impact the environment and we’re trying to reduce that across the town.”

A police spokesman said: “It seems that motorists are continuing to contravene the road closures on market days. Please be assured that if you are caught doing so you will be prosecuted.”
