THERE has been much publicity about the state of Barrow's high street.

There is a perception that it is dying with shops closing left, right and centre.

But this week, a new flower shop has opened on Scott Street.

And on Saturday, the long-awaited Well Fed Community Grocers finally opened its doors.

Food including fresh fruit and vegetables will be provided by supermarkets and wholesalers from surplus stock.

All the money made will be pumped back into the store and projects by The Well, which works with addicts.

The Well was set up to combat addiction following a spike in drug deaths, which have dramatically reduced since it was created.

As well as reducing the amount of food which goes to waste, the store aims to bring the community together.

The food will be offered at discount prices, giving shoppers on low-income the chance to eat healthy without breaking the bank.

Work has been going on behind-the-scenes for many months to get the store open.

The team at The Well should be commended for their determination to help the Barrow community.

Let's hope the store is well supported. This is exactly the type of project the town needs.
