WHEREVER you stand on the climate change debate, there's no doubt that making a few changes isn't going to kill us.

You don't have to subscribe to Extinction Rebellion and you don't need to hang on every word of Greta Thunberg to realise we chuck too much rubbish away and drive too much.

Our streets are too busy with traffic and the amount of refuse we dump in the ground has a limit.

We also waste too much power with endless devices plugged in and charging, and empty rooms with the heating on full and bulbs burning brightly.

Our parents were right all along about Blackpool illuminations!

Turning things off cuts our bills and walking more helps our waistlines.

So Barrow mayor Kevin Hamilton deserves some credit for a very honest message about plastic use at the town hall.

Before they can preach the eco-gospel, they must ensure their own house is in order.

But the council is not responsible for everything and too many people wrongly believe they are.

Householders have to take responsibility for recycling and where they put rubbish. Otherwise, the more the council clears it away, the more people think it's someone else's problem to deal with.
