A PENSIONER has described the moment a car nearly came crashing into his front room.

Derek Southward was sat watching TV when a number of large rocks came flying through his window and into his front room in School Road, Kirkby.

When he went outside he discovered a silver Audi TT had crashed into the front of his house, causing rocks from his stone wall to break off and smash through the window.

The 79-year-old retired plumber said: “My first thought was ‘have I done something to annoy someone and they’re throwing a stone through my window?’.”

“I was sat at the far end of the living room but if I’d been sat in the chair by the window the rocks would have hit me.”

Neighbours came rushing out to help the female driver who was still sat in the vehicle in a state of shock, Mr Southward said.

“I’m not sure how it happened but she had hit a parked car first and then her car must have somehow spun round and ended up as it did.

“Nobody was hurt which was the main thing but those two cars will be written off I expect.

“The parked car belonged to a young woman who was visiting next door and doing the lady’s nails.

“When she came out she couldn’t believe what had happened to her car; the tyres were just gone.”

Mr Southward’s son and daughter, who both work in Barrow, have been helping him to deal with the aftermath and a neighbour kindly brought some wood round to board up the smashed window.

Police officers also attended the scene to clear the road and both vehicles were later recovered.

“I’ve now got to wait for the insurance company to come out and assess the damage and have it repaired; hopefully that will get done soon and before the weather gets much colder,” Mr Southward said.

“After she had come round a bit the driver came over to say sorry but I said ‘look it’s just one of those things, accidents happen, it’s done now’.”

The female driver, who was believed to have been driving from Broughton Mills to Barrow at the time, was not arrested.
