TRAIN passengers in Dalton have been warned they face journey disruption.

Network Rail is set to carry out a series of rail works from November 30 until March 8 near to the Dalton junction.

Work will be undertaken between 10.30pm November 30 until 10.15am on December 1. Then at the same time again from January 18 until Sunday 19, 2020.

A Network Rail said: “This work is part of our Railway Upgrade Plan and to deliver better railway for Britain.

“This work will involve renewing railway components.

"We will be using road rail vehicles, tower lights, generators, and hand tools.

“Safety is our priority and for this reason work of this nature must be carried out while trains are running.

“Under our licence conditions we are contractually obliged to work, whenever possible, at times that cause that cause the least disruption to train services.

"Unfortunately, this means carrying out a lot of our improvements during the night and at weekends.”

Robert Parker, from Furness Line Action Group, said the dates chosen for the work should minimise the number of people negatively affected.

He said: "They are looking to sort all along that route so they can increase the speed of the service.

“If there is anything other than overnight line work then it will be shut and bus services will most likely be used.

“Weekend evening work should not bother anyone.

“The only issue could be the evening service on the Saturday night.”

Further dates for work include January 25 and 26 running on consecutive weekends until February 23.

As well as Monday January 20 and Tuesday January 21, 2020 between 12.45am until 4.10am, then at the same time on February 29, March 1, 2, 8, and 9, 2020. This means most services will go undisrupted.

Councillor Wendy Maddox, who represents Dalton on Barrow Borough Council, said: “I do not know what they are doing exactly, but I believe it is just upgrade work.

“Most of the work is taking place at night at the weekends so I do not really think they are going to bother us that much. I think we will be alright.”

More information on the nature of the railway works is yet to be released by Network Rail.
