THE highly regarded singers of Ulverston’s own ladies choir are bringing their voices to Dalton-in-Furness on Sunday in an afternoon of words and music with the promise to "entertain, soothe and enlighten."

The prizewinning Ghyll Singers' concert will be staged at the former Methodist church on Wellington Street and designed to appeal to all who love live music, but find travel difficult on dark autumn and winter evenings.

The gently calming music by such diverse composers as Elgar, Oscar Petersen and Eric Whitacre will sit alongside terrific selections of tunes from The Sound of Music and Jerome Kern’s All the Things You Are. Also, the audience can expect to be amused and enlightened by 'comic and curious' readings by members of the choir.

Talented Dalton Town Band member James Madden will be guest soloist, performing on the euphonium and piano. Accompaniment will be courtesy of in demand pianist and organist, Margaret Harrison and musical director Deborah Milledge will both conduct and compere.

One of the region's leading choral outfits, the Ghyll Singers were founded by the Afternoon Townswomen’s Guild in Ulverston in 1941 and regularly perform around Furness and South Lakeland. In March they beat off stiff competition to win the Ladies Choir class at South Cumbria Musical Festival.

Deborah has been the Ghyll Singers director since September 2010. Under her direction the choristers continue developing as singers and enjoy the fresh challenges of new repertoire, including her own arrangements. The 2.30pm concert is a fundraiser for Dalton Community Church.
