BRINGING a story to life is the hardest part of teaching a child to read.

Well that is unless you are Mick Cull the headteacher of Ormsgill Nursery and Primary School.

He has reinvented story time at the school by encouraging his teaching staff to record themselves reading their pupils most loved tales.

Launching the scheme himself with ‘Possum Magic’, Mr Cull said the video stories had proved a real hit with pupils and parents alike.

Mr Cull said: “We place a huge importance on reading here at Ormsgill School.

“We love to promote reading for pleasure and we like to promote reading at home too.

“We have other staff that are going to be recording themselves for the children.

“There is no set schedule for the videos to be posted but there is definitely more to be released.

“The videos have seemed been really popular so far and we have had a lot of great feedback from it.

“The children have been coming into school saying, ‘I’ve seen your video’, and they seem to all be really enjoying them.

“It was a collective idea to start making the videos, we were just having a discussion about the different ways that we can get the children to read more.

“I guess that the idea is quite similar to the show CBeebies Bedtime Stories in a sense.

“The most important thing to all of us is finding a way to get children more excited about reading.

“We are all really pleased with the reaction to the videos and it sounds like some other schools are planning to do something similar.”

Some teachers have even been taking story requests.

Since the release of the initial video there have been three more that have been posted by the school.

The latest instalments feature year one teacher Miss Baxter reading ’Room on the Broom’, year two teacher Mrs Reid reading ‘My Big Shouting Day’ and senior teaching assistant Mrs Mayvers reading ‘Little Mouse, I Love You’.

All the videos are being shared on the school's website and Facebook.
