TRANSPORT enthusiasts rallied together for Furness Model Rail Club’s 57th exhibition.

For more than half a century, the Furness Model Railway Club has been hosting the event, which boasts intricately built railway layouts as well as offering engineering, aircraft and ship displays for visitors.

The exhibition, which took place at Barrow Sixth Form College, attracted crowds of transport afficionados to the weekend-long event.

Chairman of the Furness Model Railway Club, Russell Peters, described the exhibition as a ‘unique experience’ which incites the interest of both old and young audiences.

He said: “Some modellers have travelled across the country to present their displays.

“I think it’s a great family-friendly event which celebrates transport from across the ages.”

Mr Peters said the event helped give people a glimpse into old transport as well as new.

“It’s a great way of showing people how different modes of transport used to look,” he said.

“We’d like to hope that people, especially younger people, might see modern railways and become somewhat inspired by what they can make if they commit some time and patience.”

As well as showcasing a miniature transport world, the event also featured a mini train ride, virtual train driving experience and offered a free vintage bus service across the town.

Mr Peters said: “The simulation train driving is just another way we hope to get young people to foster enthusiasm for the hobby.

“It offers a life-like experience into the different systems and operations involved in train-driving."

Karen Baxter brought along her nine-year-old daughter Sarah to the fun-filled two-day long exhibition.

She said: “I think days like these are a great introduction for young people to become interested in transport.”
