THE date on which the Super Soapbox Challenge is set to return to Barrow next year has been revealed.

After a successful first event in June and a record attendance of 14,000 people, organisers say the event will return at Spring Bank Holiday.

The Barrow BID Super Soapbox Challenge returns to Dalton Road on Sunday, May 24.

Organisers hope the 3,000 out of town visitors who attended this year's event will be tempted to return to Barrow's high street in 2020.

Adrenaline fans who can see themselves hurtling down the huge ramp with only a soapbox, their team-mates, and gravity to help them are invited to enter a soapbox into the race.

The race course for 2020 is hoping to exceed expectations with a more exciting and challenging track with some new features.

Organisers said the pits will be doubled in size to accommodate a larger capacity as well as being re-sited to run along Dalton Road behind the ramp to allow easier access to the start area and provide more room.

Barrow BID will be running this community event alongside The Super Soapbox Challenge Company Limited.

Andrew Pearson, events marketing director for Super Soapbox Challenge Ltd, said: “We are building on the success of the previous years event and we plan to make the 2020 event bigger and better to exceed expectations.

“The function of this is to support the town centre of Barrow and get people to come and see what it has to offer and last year 22 per cent of spectators were from outside of the area.

“Last year they spent around £250,000 on the day which includes the money generated from around 1000 people who stayed overnight. The restaurants and hotels are the main beneficiaries from events like this.

“Last year it raised around £27,000 for the charities nominated by the racers themselves.

“It is a good family day out which is fun for all and is popular with everyone which is great and I have my fingers crossed for the weather.”

Cllr Kevin Hamilton, Mayor of Barrow, said: “It is absolutely wonderful that it is returning, we need more events like this in Barrow, the more the better.

“I welcome it back with open arms, it was very enjoyable for all spectators, especially the children, it takes me back to the days when we used to make our own ones, it is absolutely brilliant."
