A FUNDRAISING bid to raise a quarter of a million pounds for a disabled facility has hit a major milestone.

Barrow District & Disability Association (BDDA) has raised almost £10,000 towards its £250,000 goal through its hugely-successful Build-A-Brick campaign.

The charity first began its Build-A-Brick campaign four months ago after the mother of a disabled client bequeathed it £96,000.

The BDDA chose to use this donation to help provide a purpose-built disablement and advice centre for the local disabled community.

The charity plans on converting the former Identities building, which sits adjacent to the current BDDA site, into a larger, more extensive facility.

Honorary chief executive of the BDDA, Margaret Burrow, said it was a ‘great and encouraging feeling’ to almost reach the first £10,000 in ‘brick’ sales.

She said: “Each brick sold is a tiny step nearer to create and extend our centre so that we can work more effectively with other excellent advice providers in the community.

“Most people think the Barrow & District Disability Association is Government funded but this isn’t the case.

“We strive to provide all that we do with the generosity of some small local grants and from Grant Trusts where our grant applications are successful.

“We are grateful for even a £1 donation because these all count up to a big amount eventually.”
