A FARMYARD in miniature came to Barrow town centre for a day as surprised shoppers were joined by sheep, hens and pigs back in 2000.

The Mail, on June 13, noted: "The unusual sight was part of a campaign to make people more aware of food production in the area.

"A travelling farmyard was set up in Dalton Road as farmers brought some of their stock for people to look at.

"It was organised by the National Farmers' Union."

Farmer Johnny Ball was spending the summer on tour with the unusual agricultural show.

He said: "I think this is a fantastic way of providing the public with a real opportunity to re-establish an important link with the countryside.

"The success of the farmers' markets in the county is evidence that people want to buy local produce."

The NFU Food and Farming Roadshow also featured interactive games and quizzes for the youngsters.
