A JOCKEY who was caught speeding was among the drivers in court for motoring offences.

Callum David Bewley, 25, who is a professional freelance jockey, was caught speeding at 47mph on the A66 trunk road at Kirkby Thore on January 23.

The limit is 40mph.

The offence was proved by single justice procedure.

Bewley, of Melbourne Road, avoided a disqualification as the court heard a loss of licence could end his career, as serious injuries mean he is unable to use public transport.

He was fined £82, told to pay a £30 victim surcharge, to pay £85 in costs and was given three points on his licence.

Also appearing dealt with by Carlisle's magistrates' court on October 3 was Dean Lythgoe.

He was caught speeding at 46mph on the same road on February 25.

The driver pleaded guilty to the offence.

Lythgoe, 51, of Warwick Road in Carlisle, was fined £264, told to pay a £30 victim surcharge and to pay £85 in costs.

He also had three points added to his licence.

A 22-year-old Penrith man was banned from driving and racked up a court bill of more than £300 after he pleaded guilty to two charges of driving without insurance.

Kyle John Michael Pelham was caught driving without insurance on two separate occasions in Penrith in May - one in Sandgate and one in Raiselands Croft.

He was fined a total of £230, was ordered to pay £85 in costs and to pay a £30 victim surcharge.

Pelham was also banned from driving for six months and had 12 points added to his licence.

Meanwhile a 21-year-old Stainton man had five points added to his licence and was ordered to pay nearly £200 after admitting driving without due care and attention.

Brook Alexander Wilcox Birley, of Stainton Hill, admitted driving without due care and attention on the M6 in Penrith.

The court heard how he got too close to a heavy goods vehicle and swerved, causing the car to spin across lane two and three before crashing into the central barrier.

Wilcox Birley was fined £80, told to pay a £30 victim surcharge and to pay £85 in costs.

He also had five points added to his licence.
