Dowdales School raised more than £800 during Team Jake's 16th birthday celebrations.

They hosted the cake sale in memory of Jake Ellis who lost his battle with cancer in 2008 and raised a fantastic £824.98.

Year 11 student Ben Pascoe approached head teacher Emma Aubrey asking for the Dalton school to support the efforts.

Ben went to Newbarns primary school with Jake, who was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a tumour which develops from muscle or fibrous tissues.

Headteacher Emma Aubrey said: “It was an honor that Ben asked me to support him, I was proud to do so. I asked the staff to contribute birthday cakes and the response was amazing, the hall was full.

"It was an honor that Ben asked me to support him, I was proud to do so. I asked the staff to contribute birthday cakes and the response was amazing – the hall was full. Staff at school also decorated the hall in red, Team Jake colours, balloons and banners. We advertised the cake sale and wrote to parents and carers for support. At lunch time students and staff made a beeline for the hall and within 20 minutes we had sold out. Monday highlighted just how strong we are as a community. The whole celebration felt amazingly supportive."
