A 22-YEAR-OLD Carlisle man has been given a 12-month community order and was ordered to pay more than £170 after he admitted trying car doors and stealing.

David Michael Kirkup appeared before Carlisle’s magistrates’ court charged with three offences: two of theft from a vehicle and one of interfering with a vehicle.

They all took place on Langrigg Road on September 13.

Outlining the prosecution case, Adrian Hollamby told the court how witnesses saw Kirkup – of Stonegarth in the Morton area of Carlisle – trying to open car doors in the area.

Mr Hollamby explained the experience of one witness: “One saw Mr Kirkup trying her daughter’s vehicle and told him in robust language to go away.

“Police were alerted and Mr Kirkup was spotted a few streets away in possession of a sat nav and had been seen to discard a purse.”

The court heard how Kirkup was not a man of previous good character.

“He has got a record,” Mr Hollamby added, “but he has not been before the court since 2017.”

Mark Shepherd, defending, said: “He said he had been fighting with a partner for around a month and she had asked him to leave that evening.

“He’d taken diazepam, which had the unfortunate effect of making him act in a way that was out of control.”

Mr Shepherd added that the sat nav and purse were also recovered at the scene.

The court also heard how Kirkup had suffered from ADHD, dyspraxia and autism.

“He doesn’t have a professional support network now and is going alone,” continued Mr Shepherd.

“The consequence of this event is that he will be evicted from his property.

“He has been told he is not welcome there.

“That is the situation, he faces the real prospect of eviction.”

Kirkup was given a 12-month community order.

That requires him to complete 30 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days and 60 hours of unpaid work over the course of the next year.

He was also ordered to pay a £90 victim surcharge and to pay £85 in prosecution costs.
