A 21-YEAR-OLD man who “used his teeth as a weapon” outside a Carlisle nightclub was ordered to pay more than £200 and to complete unpaid work.

Jordan Joseph Roy Sowden admitted two counts of assault by beating when he appeared before the city’s magistrates’ court.

The court heard how Sowden had attempted to enter the Outrageous nightclub shortly before 2am on August 30.

Adrian Hollamby, prosecuting, said: “Door staff, Phoebe Lockhart and Ryan Smith, refused him entry because he was play fighting inside and outside the club and was drunk.

“He became aggressive and whilst being restrained he bit the left thumb of Phoebe Lockhart causing it to bleed, and punched Ryan Smith to the face, causing pain to his nose and lip.”

It was heard how Sowden had no recollection of what happened.

“The injuries were minor, but these were people just doing their job,” continued Mr Hollamby.

Mark Shepherd, defending, said Sowden, of Dowbeck Road, Carlisle, had made the best of a bad situation.

“The best thing you can do is accept it and say sorry for your actions, then take steps to stop this happening again.

“In short, that is what he has committed to.”

The court heard how references submitted on behalf of Sowden testified that the actions on August 30 were out of character, with the defendant himself acknowledging that he can be aggressive when drunk.

Mr Shepherd said that Sowden had since apologised to both bouncers involved, buying a pint for Mr Smith.

Presiding magistrate Roger Birkett said: “We are going to sentence you by means of unpaid work - 200 hours. You have shown genuine remorse.”

He was ordered to pay £100 in compensation to Phoebe Lockhart and £50 to Ryan Smith, and to pay a £90 victim surcharge.
