Recognition that money needs to be spent on long overdue work on the A66 highlights all too clearly the madness of driving lorries carrying nuclear warheads along a route which has already been the scene of far too many accidents.

Despite this, it was only last month that yet another convoy carrying nuclear warheads was spotted on the A66 close to Appleby.

It was travelling on the A66 and M6 in Cumbria, en-rote from the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Berkshire to the Trident submarine base at Coulport in Scotland.

Exposing our local communities to the inevitable risks resulting from transporting nuclear warheads on some of our busiest roads is completely unacceptable.

It is time that these convoys were stopped.

Cumbria’s roads are no place for nuclear warheads.
