THE crowds came out when British Nuclear Fuels gave Furness people the chance to see how spent atomic power station fuel was shipped around the world.
A pair of open days in 1997 saw visitors look around the nuclear flask cargo ship Pacific Teal at the BNFL Barrow dock terminal.
The Mail, on Tuesday, June 17, noted: "More than 200visitors flocked to Saturday's first open day in the opening two hours.
"With a crew of 26, the Pacific Teal is one of six BNFL ships which ply a regular route between Britain, Japan and France.
"BNFL press officer Harold Ashurst explained that safety is the maximum priority with the vessels graded by the International Maritime Association and regarded as some of the safest ships afloat.
"Mr Ashurst said the open day helped in improving people's understanding and perception of BNFL."
