A CROWD of around 2,000 Furness music fans had a picturesque backdrop to a day of live bands back in 1995.

The cause of the fun was Amphi 95, organised by Furness Live Music on a site close to the historic Furness Abbey ruins.

The Mail, on Monday July 17, noted: "Droves of spectators, under the watchful glare of the yellow-shirted stewards, began congregating on the banks of the Amphitheatre from as early as midday.

"Most displayed their musical tastes proudly in one way  or another - whether it was the style of their hair, the bands on their t-shirts, or their clothes.

"The sloping green banks of the Amphitheatre provided an ideal comfy coliseum to view the live music gladiators of Furness.

"They included Bees in a Coma, Short Fuse,Stone jabba, the Smashers, the Magic Toyshop and many more.

"The event, staged every year by Furness Live Music, was exceptionally well attended."

Rain caused a slightly late start for the acts and the first to appear on stage was Ulverston's Bees in a Coma with a few songs of their own and covers of I Only Wanna Be With You, Wuthering Heights and You Are My Sunshine.

The event was not without controversy as police hadcalled for an early end to both to the music and to any drink sales.

When the programme for Amphi 95 was printed the organisers were unsure if the bands would be required to pack up an go home at8pm.

There were also fears that the 1995 event might be the last big live band event - and visitors were warned against lighting fires, leaving litter and taking risks when crossing the railway line.

Music fans were told: "The future of the Amphi as we know it is under serious threat.

"One stupid action by any of you would ruin it for thousands of others.

"We are not asking a lot, just for you to use your common sense.

"No one is making rules just for the sake of it but it is a matter of your safety."
