A NEW report shows the positive impact the Barrow Island welfare hub has had on the local community with more than 300 interventions since it opened.

The Well Communities has revealed statistics showing the number of people who have been supported by the Well at the Welfare Hub based in Egerton Court.

The hub opened in January 2019 and was designed to help residents get support from a range of community agencies for issues relating to alcohol and drug addiction, domestic violence, mental health and various others.

The new report shows that since the Hub opened, the team from the Well have made more than 328 interventions.

July and August were the two busiest months of the year so far with 43 and 44 interventions.

This includes 56 people who have been helped to get access to foodbank vouchers, 46 residents who were helped with addiction related issues, 45 people who were helped with mental health related issues and 18 people who were given support for debt and finance problems.

Further statistics are expected to be released which will give further insight in to the positive impact the welfare hub has had on the community.

Ged Pickersgill, the Project Manager at the Well Communities, said: “I think the work we’ve been able to do at the hub since it opened has been really successful.

“I think it has become a real beacon of hope for people who might be struggling.”

Following the success of the Egerton Court Hub, there has been some discussion about introducing a similar service in other areas of Barrow such as Ormsgill.

Mr Pickersgill said: “We would welcome the same approach being used elsewhere.”
