WHEN it comes to toys there is only one place in Barrow we are heading.

And its owner, Phil Heath is this week's Trader of the Week.

Mr Heath has been running Heath’s Toymaster in Dalton Road since 1971.

Children across Furness head there for the very best in indoor and outdoor toys as well as electronic equipment and board games.

Toy enthusiast, Mr Heath has been at the helm of the business since he finished school. He worked along side his father, who first started the business as a toy stall in the old Barrow Market before buying the shop where the market is now before buying the shop on Dalton Road in 1965.

Mr Heath said: “The shop was originally a stall in the old Barrow Market.

"My father bought a shop which was where the new market is now, but when the council announced the plans for the new market, he then bought the store on Dalton Road and we have been there ever since.”

He said: “We have since expanded the toy shop to sell things like stationery and craft supplies and I became an official member of the Toymaster group.”

Store assistant, Jayne Russan, has worked for Mr Heath in the shop for 10 years, said: “Phil is great fun to work for, he is hardworking and a lovely boss.

"All of the current employees have worked here for around 20 years but we all absolutely love it.”

The business has been running for more than 50 years and they also offer a book ordering service with next day delivery.

On receiving the Trader of the week award, Mr Heath said: “I’m speechless. It is really nice to be appreciated.”

When asked about what his favourite thing about owning the toy store is, Mr Heath said: “It is definitely seeing the look on children’s faces when they come in and see all of the toys on offer.

“In this day and age technology has a big impact and most people shop online so when children get to come into the shop and actually see the toys first-hand, it is fantastic to be a part of.”

Staff at the shop are always happy to help any customer who comes through their door and they promise that if you do not see something you want, they will always try their best to order it in specially for you.
