MORE than 150 homes could be at risk of flooding if ‘urgent’ action is not taken, says an Ulverston councillor.

Overgrown shrubbery could cause ‘detrimental impact’ on Ulverston flooding provisions if left unmonitored, according to Cllr Andrew Butcher.

The Ulverston Town Councillor said overrun bushes on Steel Street are growing ‘at a serious rate’ against a flood wall protecting the canal.

If left untouched, the councillor believes a ‘significant’ number of houses may be a risk of flooding.

He said: “We’ve got a serious issue on our hands here.

“The shrubbery is starting to grow up against the flood wall and penetrate the provisions.

“Nothing has been done to stop this from happening.

“If the flood walls become eroded, it will affect all the residents on North Lonsdale Road and the adjacent streets.”

Cllr Butcher said if no action is taken, flooding risk is an ‘inevitability’.

“This is a major concern for a lot of residents in the area,” he said.

“District councillors should have all this attended to before it becomes a serious flooding issue.”

South Lakeland District Councillor, Mark Wilson, said: “This bush is something I have already asked SLDC at the depot to remove.

“I have also requested the other weeds on the rest of the street are removed promptly as well.

“The overgrown weeds is something listed on the action plan that I develop with with the SLDC as well as the appropriate manager at the depot.”
