BAE Systems has notified residents that it will be testing the Public Nuclear Alert Siren this week.
The siren will be sounded on Friday, September 20.
The alarm will be heard throughout the Barrow area at 2pm.
The test will last for approximately 5 minutes.
BAE Systems is required by the nuclear regulator, the Office for Nuclear Regulation, to periodically test its nuclear siren.
The alarm is played from loudspeakers positioned around the Devonshire Dock Hall, the main facility where submarines are constructed.
The test is to ensure the audibility of the siren across the site.
